About Fort Hunter Liggett

Fort Hunter Liggett spans approximately 165,000 acres in the Coast Range of Central California, providing a vast and varied landscape used primarily for military training. The area features rolling hills, oak woodlands, grasslands, chaparral, and riparian corridors along several creeks and rivers, including the Nacimiento and Los Lobos Creeks. The rugged terrain and relatively undeveloped nature of the installation contribute to a rich ecosystem supporting deer, wild pigs, mountain lions, and numerous bird species. Established in the early 1940s as a training facility, the fort also preserves historical structures such as the historic Hacienda, originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the 1930s, which now serves as the main headquarters. Public access is permitted year-round except during certain military training activities, allowing outdoor enthusiasts to explore miles of multi-use trails, fish in stocked lakes, and camp in several primitive and developed campgrounds. The fort is particularly popular for mountain biking due to its challenging terrain and trail system. Scenic drives along the narrow, winding roads present views of oak-studded hills and expansive valleys. Despite its primary military function, Fort Hunter Liggett offers a unique outdoor experience combining natural beauty and historic significance within a largely undeveloped landscape. Visitors appreciate the solitude and opportunity for wildlife observation as well as recreational fishing in Nacimiento and other local waters.
